Abstract

Teaching sustainability as one of the axis of furniture design is a very important and complex process at the same time, because it contains many difficulties that students face, both in terms of familiarity with the principles of sustainability and the ability to turn them into tangible results through their design idea, which requires formulating a structure for basic concepts. The principles of sustainability and how to translate them into designs that serve the community and contribute to reducing many of its problems.
Several topics were covered in the course, namely "the design concept and the creative stimulus of design in general and furniture design in particular" and "recycling and use from a sustainable perspective and its application in furniture design".
The research raises the following question: How to enable students to link between the design process of furniture and the principles of sustainability. It also poses several problems, including the ill-considered dealing with environmental waste and the inability to employ it effectively to ensure the preservation of natural resources in the long term, and also the lack of knowledge of students how to employ the principles of sustainability in interior architecture, especially furniture design.
The research aims to integrate the concepts of sustainability within the structure of the design process used in the design of furniture, and this is based on the awareness of the importance of the role that sustainability represents in achieving integration between design and the surrounding environment in a positive way. It also sheds light on the different ways of recycling and use and employing them in the furniture design process.
The study reached the students' familiarity with the principles of sustainability and how to use them in furniture design through the course. They presented a set of design solutions that dealt with the design of furniture for open spaces that combined sustainability - whether through materials, design or function.
