Prospective evaluation of "Sublay Meshplasty" in ventral hernia repair

Abstract

Background: Ventral hernia is due to a biological problem of stable scar tissue formation, mesh techniques nowadays are the methods of choice for hernia repair. Ideal site of mesh placement was debated; but now Sublay prosthetic hernioplasty has become a widely accepted procedure for incisional hernias.
Methods: 96 cases of ventral hernia with defect size < 4 inches were studied and mesh was placed in sublay position. Observations were made with regards to duration and ease of operation, wound    complications,    hospital    stay,    activity    and    recurrence. Results: This study included 96 consecutive patients who underwent hernia repair by implantation of prostheses by means of the Stoppa-Rives technique from October 2004 to March 2006. All
96 patients had the mesh implanted in the subfascial plane. The mean total time for surgery was
59.35 ± 17.12 minutes. The mean hospital stay was 2.5 ± 1.30 days, there was one recurrent case noticed after 4 months within the two years follow up.
Conclusion: Sublay placement of mesh is effective, quick and easy technique as compared to Onlay placement.
