Abstract

The Green Mountain region consist of three municipalities (ALMarj, The
Green mountain and Derna-Qubah), and considered as one of the most important
region in barley production. The low productivity and change in the areas
cultivated are considered as the main causes leading to vicissitudes of the harvest
in this region .This requires perusing of the reasons of this deficiency in the light
of constraints and restriction in the areas under study Therefore, this study aimus
to understand and analyze the factors impacting (affecting) barley production in
the Green Mountain region in particular. The study also aimed to participate in
finding solutions to the problems which block barley production, and conquering
them. This could be achieved through primary references, such as collected data
(field study) during the year 2006-2007. The Green Mountain region has been
selected (as asample of this study) because it is one of the most important regions
of barley production.

The most important inputs affecting barley production in these
municipalities were the cultivated area in hectare, the planted kind of seeds, the
fertilizers quantity in kg, the mechanized working hours, and the rain fall in mm,
along with the other various factors affecting productivity from one municipality
to another due to the other circumstances and nature of each municipality.
It was clear from the study that there were several problems facing the
producers for barley harvest, these problems have been tabulated according to
their importance. The problem of irrigation was in first place; i.e.. 100% of the
farmers opinion in the sample; followed is the problems regarding low
productivity seeds representing 90.4% of the total opinions; next, the problems of
marketing with 74.5% of the farmers opinion in the sample; then the problem of
labors with 71.8%; and finally a collection of other problems such as no
agricultural guidance, and the small size of cultivated area representing opinion of
farmers in the sample. of the 66.5%.
