Abstract

The research was done to indentify the degree of public participation in
developing some villages in the New Valley Governorate, to determine the
relationship between the studied independent variables and the degree of popular
Participation in the development process, to define the contributing part of the
independent variables of significant correlation in explaining the total variance in the
change of popular participation in developing such villages.
The research also recognized respondent's problems that limit their participation
in developing society at the study area as well as respondent's suggestions to support
and boost public participation from their point of view.
The study was carried out in the New Valley Governorate as follows: El Massara
and El Bashendy villages – El Dakhla Center, El Liwaa (Major General) and El Kefah
villages – El farafra Center, the two villages are considered major centers in terms of
people's participation in the development process.
Data were collected via personal interviews with respondents using questionnaire
form during February, 2014. Data were analyzed using the Percentage %, Replicate
Tabular Presentation, Burson's Simple Correlation Coefficient and Model analysis
Multiple Regression.
With regard to identifying the degree of public participation in developing
society in some villages in the New Valley Governorate, results showed that 74.83 %
were of moderate and high public participation in terms of environment conservation,
82.72 % were of moderate and high public participation in utilizing date palm fronds,
74.83 % were of moderate and high public participation in manufacturing carpets
from sheep wool and 82.72 % were moderate and high of the total degree of public
participation.
Results showed a significant correlation at 0.01 significance level among the
levels that express respondent's perspective in the change of public participation in
developing society in some villages in the New Valley Governorate in terms of age,
the attitude toward the involvement in environmental activities, the trend toward the
engagement in public participation, the degree of exposure to the sources of
information, and tendency to adopt latest innovations and updates.
Results also indicated a significant correlation at 0.05 significance level between
the degree of public participation in developing society in some villages in the New
Valley Governorate and the studded independent variables in terms of land possession
size, participant's education level, whereas there was an insignificant relationship for
one variable i.e. the degree of opinion leadership.
Results also revealed that there were six(6) independent variables of the total
independent variables explain around 44.2 % of the total variance of public
participation in developing society in some villages in the New Valley Governorate.
