Abstract

The study aimed to estimate the size of losses of wheat and maize crops in the different stages according to the size of cultivated tenure in Sohag Governorate, and identify the most important factors affecting this loss and how to overcome them aiming to reduce the percentage of losses in the crops under study. To achieve the aforementioned research aims, the inductive method were used the economic analysis in terms of descriptive, quantitative, and percentages. Some statistical and standard analysis tools were also applied. A contrast analysis method and a less significant difference method (L.S.D) were also used. The field study was carried out through a questionnaire that was collected (by personal contact) from a random, multistage stratified sample of 200 farms, representing the various tenure groups of farmers of wheat and maize crops in Sohag Governorate during 2018/2019, including three areas (Sohag, Maragha and Akhmim). For wheat, when ranking the tenure categories in terms of the amount of losses, the highest was the first category (less than an acre) followed by the second category (from acre to less than 3 acres), then the third category (greater than 3 acres), respectively. This indicates that large agricultural tenures contributed to some extent in reducing losses of wheat crop, on the contrary to the small tenures. Also, it was found that the large tenures of maize contributed to some extent in reducing maize crop losses, as well as small tenures may be due to their dependence on the family work. All the obtained data were discussed in this study.
