Abstract

Thirty horses and twenty six donkeys affected with a variety of arthritides were injected varying amounts of (1) Hydrocortisone acetate or Hydrocortisone sodium hemisuccinate every 4-5 days or (2) Proteolytic enzymes, Trypsin and Chymotryp < /strong>sin or both together day by day. The synovial fluid was aspirated from each condition before and after treatment to re veal the tendoncy for such effusion to their normal prop < /strong>erties as well as the best drug used for such affections. Clinical response, in all cases, was indica ted by relief of pain, reduction of inflamma tion and the gait returned to the normal. It was found that proteolytic enzymes have a more therapeutic effect in haemarthrosis and gout affections, while Hydrocortisons were effective in other forms of arthritides.
