Abstract

One hundred one day-old Dikki-4 chicks, were used to study the effect of vaccination and challenge with Newcastle disease virus on the level of total protein, calcium, inorganic p < /strong>hosphorus, potassium, sodium and chloride in serum and vitamin A and total carotenoids in serum and liver. 1. The vaccinated birds showed no significant differences in the levels of total pro
tein, inorganic phosphorus, calcium, sodium, chloride, and vitamin A in serum and
vitamin A and total carotenoids in liver. 2. The potassium and total carotenoid levels in serum were significantly reduced 4
days p < /strong>ostvaccination. 3. The total serum protein level was significantly reduced in the unvaccinated chall
enged birds 4 days p < /strong>ostinoculation. 4. The serum calcium level was significantly elevated 4 days and 2 weeks in vaccinated
and unvaccinated birds as a result of challenge with NOV. 5. Four days p < /strong>ostinoculation serum potassium level was significantly increased in
unvaccinated challenged birds. 6. Vitamin A level in serum Increased significantly in vaccinated birds postinooulation
while the total carctenoid level was shorply decreased in vaccinated group 2 weeks postinoculation. The vitamin A content in the liver of unvaccinated birds was sig nificantly increased 4 days postinoculation
