Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure and quantify levels of some cytokines implicated in the immunopathogenesis in the gut biopsies of cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Frozen duodenal biopsies were collected from cats referred for investigation of chronic vomiting and/or diarrhea (n=3) that were diagnosed with IBD. Duodenal biopsies from control cats (n=5) were examined for the expression of mRNA for pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, IL-12 and TNF-α, and anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 using real-time RT-PCR. There was no significant difference between levels of expression of different tested mRNA cytokines in the two groups of cats (p>0.05). These findings suggest that the immunopathogenesis of feline IBD involve different mechanisms from that of other studied species and does not follow the classic Th1/Th2 paradigm.
