Introduction:Oral Lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic mucocutaneous
disorder with an immune mediated pathogenesis. Its clinical types may vary from reticular, popular, plaque, erosive, atrophic, and bullous type.
Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical hyaluronic acid in management of oral lichen planus.
Subjects and Methods: A total of twenty two patients were included in this study. Incisional biopsies were taken from all patients at baseline for histopathological confirmation of the diagnosis of OLP. Eleven subjects were treated by topical gengigel 0.2% for 8 weeks, and 11 subjects were treated by placebo gel 1% for 8 weeks. The subjective and objective scores including reticulation area, erythematous area, ulceration area, and pain score of the two groups were recorded at baseline, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of treatment.
Results: The results of the present study, showed significant improvement in all clinical parameters (reticulation area, erythematous area, ulceration area, and pain score) in the gengigel group after 8 weeks of treatment with topical 0.2% gengigel. In placebo group, there was no significant change in all clinical parameters after 8 weeks of treatment with topical placebo gel.
Conclusion: Topical application of hyaluronic acid (HA) is effective in management of OLP.
