Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this clinical investigation was to assess the regenerative potential of local application of metformin gel in enhancement of bone healing after surgical removal of intra-bony jaw lesions. Patients and methods: Fourteen patients treated by surgical removal of intrabony jaw lesions; theywere randomly and equally categorized in two groups. In the control group, the jaw cavity was kept empty, while in the Study group, metformin gel was applied to fill the jaw cavity after lesion removal. Clinical scaleswere assessed immediately and seven days later /whlileradiographic evaluation was done immediately and at 12 months postoperatively. Results:There were insignificant difference among the two groups as regard bone density of newlyformed bone and bone defect volume. Conclusions:From a clinical point of view, Metformin is considered a safe and well tolerable material when applied locally. Although there is doubt of its osteo-inductive property which may hinder its use for enhancing bone healing. Key Words:Metformin gel, Bonedensity,Bone defect volume.
