Background: Dental abnormalities which can cause visible anterior teeth differences in adolescents affect the satisfaction levels of appearance and probably have negative effect on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL).
Aim: estimated the prevalence of anterior abnormalities on a group of children in Damietta Governorate, and the effect of such abnormalities on the children's OHRQOL.
Design of the Study:-Descriptive cross-sectional study design was performed on the children at the first year of preparatory schools. About 600 children of both genders were included in this study. They were randomly selected from the preparatory schools in 3 centers in Damietta governorate. They represented urban and rural areas.
Results: prevalence of the observed abnormalities at the three centers of Damietta was 97.5%, the highest prevalence was for the malocclusion and the lowest one was caries. The most prevalent malocclusion was mandibular anterior irregularity, the lowest prevalent malocclusion was mandibular over jet. In this study children with malocclusion, caries and TDI reported a highly significant difference percentage of problems compared to their normal peers regarding satisfaction with appearance, oral symptom, emotional wellbeing and self-esteem
.Conclusions: prevalence of malocclusion at three centers of Damietta ranged from (94.7%)inKaferSaad to (98.2%)in Damietta . Malocclusion has negative effects on satisfaction with appearance, oral symptoms, functional limitations, emotional well-being and self-esteem.
