Abstract

In recent decades, three-dimensional planning software packages were widely used so that the evaluation of the accuracy of the prediction algorithms of these softwares became crucial. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of Dolphin 3D software in the prediction of facial soft tissue changes following the surgical correction of dentofacial deformities. The study was conducted on seven class III patients who had undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery with maxillary advancement and mandibular setback. All the study subjects had preoperative (T0) and more than 6 months postoperative (T1) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The actual surgical skeletal displacement was quantified then the magnitude of the same movement was applied on the preoperative CBCT using Dolphin 3D software then a 3D soft tissue simulation was generated. The difference between the actual postop and simulation STLs was measured at 13 cephalometric landmarks. The mean prediction error was 2.78 mm. In conclusion, 3d dolphin software has limited ability to accurately predict the soft tissue changes after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery.
