Burden of Care and Psychological Distress among Caregivers of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder during Covid 19

Abstract

 Background: Pandemic covid 19 posed unique challenges for caregivers of children with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. caregivers of those children reported higher levels of burden,
depression , anxiety and stress during pandemic
. Aim of study: Was to examine burden of care and
psychological distress among caregivers of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD) during covid 19.
Research design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized to achieve
the aim of study.
Setting: This study was carried out in pediatric outpatient psychiatric clinic in Benha
Psychiatric health and Addiction treatment Hospital in Benha city.
Study subject: Purposive sample
of 120 caregivers having children with ADHD, males and females , were included in the study .
Tools
of data collection:
Three tools were utilized to collect data. Tool I: structured interview questionnaire
sheet to assess socio demographic, clinical data and knowledge of caregivers about ADHD.
Tool II:
The Zarit burden interview scale. Tool III: Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS -21).
Results: More than two thirds of the studied caregiver had moderate level of burden of care, more
than half of the studied caregivers had moderate psychological distress level and more than third of
studied caregiver had severe psychological distress level, and minority percent of studied caregiver
had mild psychological distress.
Conclusion: There was a statistically significant positive correlation
between total burden of care and total psychological distress among studied caregivers.
Recommendations: Implementation psycho educational program to reduce burden of care and
psychological distress among caregivers of children with ADHD.
