ENDOMETRIAL THERMAL BALLOON FOR TREATMENT OF IDIOPATHIC MENORRHAGIA: A PROSPECTIVE CLINICAL STUDY

Abstract

Study design : A prospective, ob­servational clinical study.
Setting : It was conducted at the department of obstetrics and gynecol-ogy
my. The balloon catheter was placed through the cervix and after inflation in the endometrial cavity with 5% dex­trose, was heated to 78±5 C°. All women had single 8-minute session. Patients was followed up at 3,6 and 12 months visits.
Timing; starting on May 2005, till September 2006.
Objective : To evaluate the safety and efficacy of endometrial thermal balloon ablation in women with me-norrhagia.
Patient and methods : The study included 80 women suffering from idi-opathic menorrhagia to assign them for endometrial ablation or hysterecto-
Results : Endometrial thermal bal­loon ablation procedure lead to signif­icant decrease in menstrual flow and duration (P<0.05). Success rate re­corded ranged from 89.5% to 90.9%. No intraoperative complications oc­curred, whole minor postoperative morbidity occurred in 5% of patients.
