THE PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF SOME PLANTS ON RATS TREATED WITH HEAVY METALS

Abstract

A water and ethanolic extracts for both plants (ginger and turmeric) were determined, from point of view of their content of total phenolics and flavonoids their antioxidant activity using DPPH method , total antioxidant capacity and reducing power assay and the HPLC analysis of ethanolic extract was performed to determine active compounds. The mice were treated with a 1/2 LD50 of the heavy metals ( lead - nickel ) together with different plant extracts ( ginger - curcuma ) to determine the influence of such compounds in vivo experiment  by measuring of some biomarkers to determine the recovery extent of liver, kidneys, heart and total lipid profile as well as antioxidant biomarkers. It was found that there was a significant improvement in the levels of such biomarkers at all. Where the levels of antioxidant biomarkers, showed an increased in general in SOD, GPx , GR, GST, G6PDH, CAT, GSH and a decreased in MDA levels; from the level of liver function markers, kidneys function, total lipid profile markers and heart functions was observed also, all treatments  compared to the control groups. The ginger extracts were more effective than curcuma ones comparing with positive control, and that the ethanol extracts were more effective them that of aqueous extracts as antioxidant and as protective agent against cells damage.
