Abstract

Pedestrian paths play an important role, socially, environmentally and economically, in the urban environment. This role has been greatly affected since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution due to the attention to the physical requirements and necessities of vehicles' movement. The research aims to restore the role of urban spaces by studying the specific needs of pedestrians and to achieve standards for the quality of pedestrians' paths which, through their application, can increase pedestrian movement, improve the environment, and achieve a sustainable network. The research problem is represented in the ignorance of most of the urban and visual aspects of pedestrian paths whether in existing or new cities. In addition, deficiency in the public transport and transportation schemes and the network of pedestrian paths, led to the deterioration of the urban environment and the disappearance of safe pedestrian paths within the urban fabric. The research concludes set of criteria that aims to achieve the quality of pedestrian paths and restore the social and cultural role of pedestrian paths to achieve sustainable development which will subsequently benefit the spatial structure of the city.
