Abstract

Matrouh governorate is situated in the north-western corner of Egypt, extending for 450 kms on the Mediterranean coast from km 61 west of Alexandria till the Libyan borders at Saloum and 400 kms south till the south of the Siwa oasis. Although the area flourished in the Graeco-Roman period because of its port but historical evidence prove that it was also known in the Pharaonic period. Forts, temples and tombs were erected in the Pharaonic period whether on the coast or in Siwa Oasis or even on the road of the ancient caravans that connected Siwa with the Oases of El Baharya and Farafrah. This includes the fort of Ramesses II at Omm El Rakham, the fort of el Alamein, temple of Amun in Siwa, temple of Umm Ebbayda, Gebel el Takrour, tombs at the mountain of the dead and the temple of Nactanebo I in the oasis of El Bahrein. This paper aims at investigating the Pharaonic tangible cultural heritage in Matrouh Governorate as a way to focus on its importance and include it in one research, also identify its places on the map which could help in suggested programs for tourists' attraction.
