Abstract

Through this essay, I have sought to illustrate how Habermas can help us understand social media's current role and future scope as a political PR tool and the public sphere. Social media shows tremendous potential for transforming into a public service media or PSM (Iosifidis, 2011). Despite government infiltration and even complete clampdowns, the monumental reach of the medium, and the sheer number of active users, it is highly probable that social media will be able to retain most elements of a public sphere. Although it may not develop the aspect of direct debate as required by Habermas' theory, it may still hold the power of mobilizing the public sufficiently to influence political change and social reform.
