Abstract

The product design students' graduation project is a harvest of their efforts, not only for the duration of their performance of the project, which usually takes two semesters and allocates a distinct aspect of credit hours and an appropriate time of implementation hours. Students will do their best to prove their eligibility to obtain the degree, in which the graduation project is an important cornerstone, despite it being at the end of their career. Research problem: It is not possible for all the courses taught by the design student to provide the full knowledge that enables him to solve problems that may not have appeared before and cannot cover the wide range covered by the field of product design in particular. This is why there should be an A design process model for graduation projects that enables them to bridge the knowledge and skill gap in a limited time. And that this model is designed for this purpose because of the wide range of different consumer needs and the clear diversity in the tools and skills required, in addition to the requirement for speed of completion due to the lack of time available. The current study proposes this model and also provides an objective comparison between a project implemented by students with and without the proposed model. The study notes that there is a clear gap between students about to graduate and experienced professional product designers. Therefore, the main question of this study was, is it possible to provide a model for a design process model to reduce this gap and compensate students during the project period for what they may have missed during their study years? Objective of the study: This study aimed to develop a model for the Design Process that provides the best ways to speed up bridging this gap, train students and enable them at their current level and the inexperienced experience they gained throughout the study period to reach knowledge of the product in question within a short period of time. It also aimed to compare the performance of students who practiced the graduation project using this model with others who did not use it. Research Methodology: The study uses both the descriptive survey and the descriptive analytical method, in addition to the inductive method, which provides the main tool in building the required model. Results: The study found a model for the design process that bridges the gap between the requirements for graduating a successful designer characterized by qualities, capabilities and knowledge that suit industrial and societal needs, and what the study provides in design education institutions.
