Abstract

The environmental burden of clothing residues has been dealt with in many studies and researches. However, most of these studies focus only on the aspects of; residue consumption, reuse, and little attention paid to the potential benefits of transforming the clothing method to (zero waste) i.e. forming zero fabric residue during manufacturing. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the use of zero waste in the ready-made garment s industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the implementation of the JIGSAW strategy in the light of sustainable practice (zero-waste) and the attempt to reach a high quality product technically and environmentally. With the aim to achieve the objectives of the research, the two researchers adopted the experimental approach, where they aimed at a comparative study between two methods of patterns . One method is conducted by applying the above strategy and comparing it with the traditional method of producing the design. The sample of the study consisted of two pieces. One piece is implemented according to the mentioned strategy and the other piece is implemented in a traditional way to obtain the same design. An arbitration form was used by specialists (in terms of the aesthetic and practical form regarding the application of the new strategies) as well as an assessment scale for measuring models implemented as study tools. The results showed statistically significant differences in cloth loss ratios between the model implemented by the JIGSAW strategy in the light of the sustainable practice (zero-waste) and the trousers implemented in the traditional method, in favor of the strategy. There was also a statistically significant difference between the average assessment adjustment of the samples implemented using the JIGSAW method and the traditional method according to the opinion of the arbitrators, in favor of the JIGSAW method. In light of the results, the study recommends including the following: developing and updating the curricula that are taught to students of clothing and textiles to meet the constant development in solving problems of production and implementation of clothing. Paying attention to the environmental problems and contributing in solving them by teaching the different strategies related to the preparation of zero waste patrons for the students of the Department of Clothing and Textiles.
