Abstract

Designing furniture is not only based on shape and its relation to the designer's personal, social, or cultural experience but also it's based on the material properties and its relevance to shape, loads, and forces applied to it. These factors must be taken into account to make a product with high quality without wasting much material. Ancient egypt – the land of the pharaohs – is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, who was the first to make studies and researches in art. Also, advanced technology was constantly being sought to improve different fields and for general purposes such as producing furniture. The furniture of ancient egypt still has the same stiffness thousands of years ago and the principles used in their carpentry are still in use today. Hence, stiffness analysis of an ancient egyptian stool was carried out in this study using historical, descriptive, and empirical methodologies using the finite element method. It has been used to analyze the stiffness of the stool using ansys© computer software. Based on the analysis, several practical observations and conclusions were drawn. The furniture of ancient egypt was designed based on aesthetical as well as functional and ergonomic aspects. Ancient egyptians used the lower stretcher in their furniture designs for more stiffness. They developed a vertical mortise and tenon joint which is much stiffer than the horizontal one. The construction rule of triangulation was used in their furniture. The results of this study are a useful basis for more investigation to be held on the furniture of ancient egypt to be used in making current furniture designs.
