A STUDY OF THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF OLIVE CROP IN SOUTH SINAI GOVERNORATE

Abstract

Olive trees are considered sacred trees and are suitable for Sinai environment, as they are considered a national wealth, olive oil is called green gold. It ranks first in list of crop composition of horticultural crops in South Sinai. The problem of the study is we production efficiency and cultivated area. Research aims to study  olive productivity and economic efficiency, Study used the descriptive and quantitative analysis method, and it relied on primary and secondary data, through questionnaire forms for a sample of 80 farms. Average productivity per fedddan was 1.5 tons, and the average total production was about 10174.7 ton. Average fruitful area in Ras Sidr, Saint Catherine, Tour Sinai, Nuweiba, Abu Rudeis, Abu Zenima and Dahab disticts was 7642.9, 194.0, 80.3, 64.4, 24.0, 15.5, and 8.1 feddan respectively, from the total governorate, which is about 8029.2 Feddan,. Production and economic efficiency indicators of factors of production were estimated. When estimating profit margins, it was found that average net return amounted to L.E. 11.95 thousand. Average return over costs amounted to L.E. 13.83 thousand, and average value added was L.E.  13.90 thousand, and average rate of return over costs amounted to 2.78, average return on L.E. invested was about 187%, while average profit margin was 65.2%. Average relative profitability was 68.4%. Finally, average economic efficiency was about 2.18, and research recommends replacement of old and low-productivity trees, and provision of a complete system to benefit from olive oil.
