Abstract

Catastrophe theory is a mathematical technique for the qualitative analysis of system equations, defining the jump phenomena and sudden changes caused by smooth changes in the system parameters. This theory has been applied previously to the study of steady state stability of power system. This paper presents a new technique in the area of power system stability studies to describe steady-state voltage stability in terms of one of the catastrophe manifolds to which the power system can be fitted.
