Abstract

Large spans have always fascinated architects and engineers. Domes provide an easy and economic method of roofing Large areas and are used frequently by the designers who realize the advantages and the impressive beauty of this form of construction. Domes are of special interest to engineers and architects as they enclose a maximum amount of space with a minimum surface and have proved to be very economic in the consumption of constructional materials. Domes are also exceptionally suitable for covering sports stadia, asseMbly halls, exhibition centers, swimming pools, shopping arcades, and industrial building in which large unobstructed areas are essential and where minimum interference from internal supports is required. The provision of unobstructed Sight-Lines for large numbers of people is the primary requirement in sports halls and can easily be satisfied through the adoption of a domic shape. In this paper The exact and approximate methods of analysis of domes are discussed.
