Abstract

This paper gives the results of a field study conducted to modify the tail muffler of an internal combustion diesel engine so that it can also acts as an efficient separator for the particulates present in the exhaust stream of that engine. The features of the best separator are it is able to remove over 85% of the particulates while its cost exceeds that of the usual tail muffler by only 50%. This separator did not cause remarkable effects on the performance of the test engine and its Collection efficiency remained approximately constant over the test (400 Working Hours)
The obtained results suggest the possibility of modifying the tail muffler of any internal combustion engine so that it can also act as an efficient particulate separator at a very low expenses.
