Abstract

The tempring behaviour of AISI 416 martensitic stainless steel over the temperature range from 200 to 900oC has been investigated, with particular attention being paid to the secondary hardening and softening effects produced by the formation of alloy carbides during tempering.
Samples were prepared in the form of cube. These samples were solution annealed at 1100oC for 2 hours followed by oil quenching. Then exposed to tempering at different temperatures (200. 320. 400. 500. 600. 700. 800. 900oC) for various time. Microstructure investigation and surface hardness measurements showed that. 416 martensitic stainless steel can with stand tempering up to 500oC. On increasing the tempering temperature to 600oC.2 hours are required for complete decomposition of martensitic structure. While at 700oC. 1 hour is quite enough. Also 416 steel – Martensitic – Solution annealing – Tempering- Secondary hardness – Microstructure – Softening – Carbides.
