Natural Convection From Dual Surface Heat Sources in a Vertical Rectangular Enclosure.

Abstract

Natural convection in a heated two-dimensional rectangular vertical enclosure is investigated numerically and experimentally for different dual heater configurations. The governing conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy for the problem are solved numerically using the finite difference technique. The study is carried out for the steady laminar flow of air in an enclosure with constant heat flux dual heaters at one adiabatic insulated vertical wall, an isothermally cooled other vertical wall and insulated horizontal walls. The range of parameters considered is 0.1≤S1/H≤0.5, 0.1≤S2/H1≤0.875, 1≤A≤Ra≤107and Pr=0.7. The results show that for the lower heater θmax and Ṅu are not affected by the location of the upper heater and the aspect ratio for A≥3. For the upper heater, θmax and Ṅu are independent on the aspect ratio and the uppper heater location in the optimum range of the upper heater location S2/H1≤0.6 and A≥3. For the iptimum ranges of the lower heater location 0.1≤S1/H≤0.5, the upper heater location S2/H1≤0.6 and the enclosure aspect ratio A≥3, θmax and Ṅu are correlated with Rayleigh number as follow: For bottom heater: θmax= 1.055 Ra-0.139, Ṅu= 1.4 Ra0.1179 For top heater: θmax=1.4 Ra-0.153, Ṅu=0.99 Ra0.135 Experimental tests were done for A=2, S1/H=0.2, S2/H1=0.29, W/L=2.5 AND Ra=3.2x104, 1.23x105, and 2.65x105 and show the validity of the numerical simulation.
