Abstract

Workers in the construction industry are at a greater risk of being injuried than are workers in most other industries. Construction injuries have broad and adverse impact which include, in addition to facilities or personal suffering of the injured workers, productivity losses incurred by the contractor, delays, extra costs and less quality of the works. Therefore, construction safety in industrialized countries is considered one of the project management objectives like cost , time and quality , in contrast, attention paid to construction safety in Egyptian projects is found to be not enough, the purposes of this paper are to find out reasons of the low level of awareness of many of Egyptian contractors of the importance of health and safety at work sites and to offer recommendations to improve construction safety in Egyptian projects. In order to achieve these objectives, a comparison between the following American and Egyptian systems is carried out : occupational safety and health administration (OSHA), conditions of contract pertaining to protection of persons and properly and workers compensation insurance laws. The recommendations of this research would hopefully be taken into consideration by the occupation safety and health highest consulting committee, in order to benefit Egyptian construction projects.
