Abstract

Purpose: : The aim evaluate the efficacy of polarized light therapy in atopic dermatitis patients and the response of ultrasonography to skin thickness measurement.
Methods: Active controlled trail, randomized, single blind design. 40 male patients with chronic atopic dermatitis were randomly split into 2 groups. The A group (20 patients) received Bioptron light therapy; B group (20 patients) received topical corticosteroid cream with (hydrocortisone 2.5%) only. Ultrasonography was used to evaluate skin thickness and SCORAD index was used to clinically estimate the degree of AD.
Results: Comparing between two groups post treatment, there's improvement in skin thickness, the improvement in group of Polarized light was 82.3 % and group of topical corticosteroids 78.1 %. The improvement of SCORAD index as improvement of Polarized light group with 518.6 % and improvement in group of topical corticosteroids 260.7 %.
Conclusion: Polarized light therapy is a simple, safe and effective procedure in treatment of atopic dermatitis which could reduce the need of long-term use of topical corticosteroid and avoid its associated side effects.
