Abstract

Background: Previous studies have shown the relationship between lung development and vitamin D, but there have been few studies to assess vitamin D level in preterm babies have respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Aim of the work: The aim of this work is to determine the role of neonatal plasma vitamin D levels on occurrence of respiratory distress syndrome and correlated its level with the degree and the severity of the disease. Patients and methods: This study included 30 preterm infants, recruited from neonatal intensive care unit of Toukh Central Hospital following informed consent from the parents during the period from July 2017 till February 2018. They are subdivided into two groups; one group with  30 preterm neonates  diagnosed as having respiratory distress syndrome, the other group with 30 healthy preterm neonates . Full history taking, clinical examinations and investigations for all neonates are including serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in both neonates. Results: In 25 % of preterm infants, 25(OH) D levels are compatible with severe deficiency (≤ 10 ng/mL), 38.3 % with moderate deficiency (10 – 20 ng/mL), and 26.7 % with mild deficiency (20 – 30 ng/mL). A normal 25(OH) D level is observed in none of the babies. Conclusion: lower neonatal 25(OH) D levels are associated with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.
