Abstract

The IEEE 802.16 standard (WiMAX ) which has emerged as a broadband wireless access technology, promises to deliver high data rates over large areas to a large number of users in the near future. This paper provides an introduction to WiMAX protocols, and then it proposes to allow the voice traffic to use contention access. The paper presents the voice calls capacity with different WiMAX parameters, like Time Division Duplex (TDD) frame duration and collision window. The paper shows that the voice capacity is around 69 Subscriber Stations (SS) assuming 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM)3/4.
