Abstract

Background: our study was designed to evaluate the effect of silver nanoparticles addition to fluoridated pits and fissure sealant (PFS) on the remineralization of enamel caries-like lesions in permanent teeth in comparison to fluoridated and non-fluoridated PFS.
Materials and methods: Forty-four sound premolars with standardized occlusal windows were immersed in the demineralizing solution for 96 hours to create initial carious lesions on the exposed enamel. They were randomly assigned into four groups: GroupI: silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) added to fluoridated PFS Group II: fluoridated PFS Group III: non-fluoridated PFS Group IV: negative control. The specimens underwent pH cycling for 10 days. The mineral content at baseline, after demineralization, and pH cycling were evaluated quantitatively by Energy Dispersive Xray and five teeth from each group were randomly selected for qualitative assessment of enamel sealant interface by Scanning Electron Microscope.
Results: Post-treatment quantitative results revealed significantly higher mean Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorous (P) content in the AgNPs than the fluoridated PFS (33.23 ± 1.09, and 16.20 ± 0.51 respectively) with no significant difference regarding the fluoride (F) content (P
