للمكان أبعاد دلالية أشارت إليها الدراسات النقدية، منها البُعد الاجتماعي والنفسي، وهما أكثر أبعاد المكان وضوحًا وانتشارًا في الفنون عامة، وفي الرواية خاصة.
أعتمد السعيد صالح على البُعد الاجتماعي للمكان ليبرز من خلاله صورة المرأة وأثر وجودها في المكان، وتأثر حياتها باختلاف المكان بسبب العادات والتقاليد، كما اتضح البُعد الاجتماعي للمكان في اختلاف بعض الطقوس الاجتماعية باختلاف أمكنتها كطقوس الزواج.
أما البُعد النفسي للمكان فتمظهر في قضية الاغتراب التي تناولها في أكثر من رواية، وما للمكان من أثر نفسي على سلوك ومشاعر الشخصية، وعلى جريان الأحداث.
أما إبراهيم صالح فنجده شكَّل من التضاد المكاني البُعد الاجتماعي للمكان، أظهر من خلاله تغير عادات وتقاليد أهل كل مكان رغم اتحاد اللغة والدولة والزمن والظروف ولكن العامل في التغير الاجتماعي كان المكان.
ومن خلال البُعد النفسي للمكان يتضح سلوك نفس الشخوص عند تغير المكان، فسلوك الشخصية القاطنة للعاصمة يختلف مع سلوكها وهي تسكن الصحراء، أيضًا عمل على إظهار البُعد النفسي للأمكنة الدينية وما لها من أثر بالغ في نفسية الشخوص وتغير أنماط حياتهم.
