EVALUATION OF ALPHA-GLUTATHIONE-S-TRANSFERASE AS A MARKER OF HEPATOCELLULAR DAMAGE

Abstract

Alpha-glutathione-S-transferase (a-GST) are the cytoplasmatic class of enzymes responsible for cellular detoxifying processes. The serum a-GST activity in relation to chronic infection caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) and acute infection caused by hepatitis A, B and C viruses. 15 anti-HCV negative and negative for HBV and HAV healthy subjects served (controls), 35 patients with chronic hepatitis [8/35 are anti-HCV positive subjects with normal alanine aminotransferases (ALT) and 27/35 chronic hepatitis are with high ALT levels]; 17 patients with acute liver disease (1 acute HCV infection, 3 acute HBV infections and 13 acute HAV infections were studied. Serum (a-GST) alpha glutathione-S-transferase, (aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase GGT, total protein, albumin, total and direct bilirubin were assayed in all subjects, and after 0 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks in the acute group.
