A Retrospective Study on Homicide Autopsy Cases in Tripoli Judicial Area From January 2007 to December 2009

Abstract

Homicide is one of the oldest crimes in human civilization which started from murder of Abel by the hands of Cane. With the passage of time, the manners of homicide have been changing. Studying the pattern of homicide in any civil society plays an important role to reduce the impact of homicidal crimes. So the aim of this work was to determine the epidemiological and medicolegal pattern of homicide deaths during the period from January 1st 2007-December 31st 2009 in Tripoli Judicial Area to take the first step for prevention of crimes. The materials used in the present study were derived from police inquest and autopsy reports that were performed in the mortuary of the Tripoli Judicial Area. The numbers of cases were 198. The obtained data were subjected to both epidemiological and medicolegal analysis. It was concluded that males constituted (86.9%), while females (13.1%). The risky age group of victims was the third decade of life. Most of victims were married and unemployed. The most common method used by the offender to commit homicide was sharp force (38.9%), blunt force (21.7%) and gunshots (15.2%). Homicide tends to occur more between acquaintance and strangers. Revenge, quarrel and financial troubles were the most common precipitating factors for homicides.
