Prevalence of Anemia among Pregnant Women Attend-ing Urban and Rural Antenatal Care Clinics in Ismailia City: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Background: Anemia occurring during pregnancy has been constituting a public health burden, especially in developing countries. The prevalence of anemia among Egyptian pregnant women was 30%. Objectives: To explore rural-urban disparity in the prevalence of anemia and to assess the knowledge regarding anemia among pregnant women attending urban and rural antenatal care clinics in the Ismailia governorate. Subjects and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in two settings: an urban setting represented by El Shouhada primary health care center, and a rural setting in represented by Fanara Family Practice center, Ismailia governorate, Egypt. The study was carried out between January 2020 to March 2020. The participant pregnant women were categorized into two groups: rural and urban, with 119 participants for each group. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, women`s knowledge regarding anemia, and adherence to iron supplements. Anemia was determined by measuring hemoglobin (Hb) levels, with a level of less than 11 g/dl being considered anemic. Results: This study included 238 pregnant women, 44.1% of subjects were anemic with a mean hemoglobin level of 10.56±1.48 g/dL. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women living in rural areas was 51.3% compared with 37% living in urban areas. There was a highly statistically significant difference in women`s knowledge regarding anemia among both groups, (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Anemia has been constituting a severe public health burden in Egypt with a prevalence of 44.1% among pregnant women.
