Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out al west of EI-Fashn Town, Beni Sw if
Governorate, Egypt, under newly redaimed sandy loam soil conditions dun 9
199912000 and 2000/2001 growing seasons to study the effect ot sewage slud~e
additions and phosphorine inoculation on pea (Pisum sativum L.) growth. yietd 8'i'd
seed contents of macro nutrients and heavy metals as compared with chemical N9K
fertilizarion. SiX1een trealments were used in this study. i.e. all combinations of two
pea cultivars( Lencolen and Victory Freezer), two tevels of phosphorine inocutati6n
(Inoculated and Uninoculaled) and four levets of sewage studge(O, 5, 10, and 15
mJlfed). A recommended chemical NPK fertilizer levels were added to the contlol
treatment only. Application of sewage sluege and phosphorine inoculation Significantly
increased fresh yield, and most of the studied plant growth parameters. They also
signIficantly increased seed content of Nand P. Sewage sludge application
significantly increased heavy metal concentrations .i.e.Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd in
pea seeds. but these concentrations were generally low and within the permissi~le
Jimits. There were significant differences between the two pea cultiv8rs.Orgapic
fertilization with sewage Sludge at 15 m3lfed either solely or with phosphor ne
inoculation produced higher yiC'ld than chemical NPK fertilization.
