Abstract

Nitrogen concentrations in the two maize cultivars were increased with an increase in salinity level up to 5.0 dsm-1. The rate of increase was decreased at the highest level of salinity (7.5 dsm-1) in cultivar (1) whereas decreased in cultivar (2). Moreover, salinity increased the concentrations of Ca++, Mg++, Na+, SO4-- and Cl- and the increase was a concentration dependent in the two cultivars studied. However, the values of cultivar (2) was found to be more than that recorded in cultivar (1) regarding total nitrogen concentrations except at 7.5 dsm-1. The rate of increases in Na+, SO4-- and Cl- was found to be higher than those of Ca++ and Mg++ as their presence in the media. On the other hand, P and K as well as Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations showed a decrease in the two maize cultivars with an increase in salinity level. The values of these elements were found to be higher in cultivar (1) than in cultivar (2) during the two growing seasons. Application of Zn, Fe and Mn increased their concentration occupied by an increase in  N, P, SO4-- and K concentrations in the two maize cultivars grown in both growing seasons overall salinity levels. Under salinity, these elements showed an additive effect to salinity on increasing N and SO4-- concentrations whereas counteracted the depressing effect of salinity on P and K as well as their concentrations was recorded with Calcium, Mg++, Na+ and Cl-.
