Abstract

The effects of an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (Glomus constrictum Trappe) on the growth, flower yield, relative chlorophyll content and some minerals and heavy metal contents of Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe biossfeldiana Poelin) plants grown in sterilized soil irrigated with different concentrations of sewage water were studied. Application of sewage water significantly reduced growth responses, flower parameters, mineral contents, and levels of mycorrhizal colonization of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal Kalanchoe plants as compared to control untreated plants particularly at high concentrations, but the rate of reduction was more pronounced in non-mycorrhizal treatments. Mycorrhizal Kalanchoe plants had significantly higher biomass, plant heights, leaf area, relative chlorophyll content, flower yield and nutrient (P, N, K and Mg) contents comparing to those non-mycorrhizal plants irrigated with or without sewage water conditions. Under sewage water application, the AM colonization had greatly reduced heavy metal (Zn, Co, Mn, Cu)  contents in the shoot and root tissues of the Kalanchoe plants as compared to equivalent non-mycorrhizal plants. This study shows that growing Kalanchoe with AM inoculum can minimize heavy metals toxicity and increase growth, flower yield and P uptake. In this regard, the AM fungi have a protective role for the host plant, thus playing important role in soil contaminant immobilization processes, therefore, are of value in phytoremediation of heavy metals in sewage water contaminated soil.
