Abstract

A stroke is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in death. Regarding the death as an outcome of stroke is not always the case as partial disabilities and paralysis may happen as well. The use of animal models in recent years has provided a better understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms of stroke. Aim: The present study includes experimental rats to detect the effect of Ginkgo biloba on induced ischemic stroke rats to detect the effect of stroke on biochemical serum analysis including thyroid hormones. This study was conducted on 60 adult rats weighing 180 ± 20 gm and of 10-12 weeks in age, supplied from the animal house of High Institute of Public Health (Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt). Animal was housed in wire mesh cages, at room temperature 22-24 c° and 12 h light/dark cycle and were fed a normal diet, standard diet (Egyptian Company of Oils and Soap Kafr-Elzayat Egypt) and allow free access to water. The Ginkgo biloba is a dietary supplement for improving circulation and memory and was purchased from (EMA Pharma pharmaceutical) from (Plaza building, Asma Fahmy st., Nozha, Nasr city, Cairo, Egypt). Results: our data showed a statistical significance difference for SGPT, SGOT, Urea, Creatinine, Uric Acid, Cholesterol, Glucose, FT3, White Blood Cells, Red Blood Cells, Hct and Platelets count. The results showed a statistically significant difference in the value of Urea, Uric Acid, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose, TSH and platelets count between control rats and induced ischemic stroke rats.
