The volatile oils (obtained using steam distillation) from A. sativum, J.
sambas flower buds and leaves of T. vulagris, R. officinalis, A. iwayomogi, M. piperita
and E. globulus were analysed by TLC.
The effects of oils were tested against 3 Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, P.
paucimobilis and K. oxytoca) and one Gram-negative bacterium (Staph aureus). T.
vulagris oil showed the highest activity against Gram-negative bacteria. A. sativum oil
showed antibacterial activity, being more effective against Staph aureus than E. coli,
while A. lrneyotuoq; oil showed considerable antibacterial activity against K. oxytoca.
M. piperita oil showed good inhibition of E. coli and P. paucimobilis. E. globulus oil
was more active against Gram-positive bacterium than Gram-negative bacteria,
whereas R. offcinalis oil and J. sambas oil were not very effective against the 4
organisms tested.
