Abstract

Since the Second Intermediate period Thoth appears over the four sides of the coffins, and recites the spell 161 of the book of the dead, to open the four openings in the sky for the dead, to allow him to breathe the wind from the four sides of the sky. This ritual is truly a secret, which no one of the people should know. In this research I'll try to explain the importance of this ritual for the dead and the development of its representation over the coffins.
