Aflatoxins in Milk and Some Dairy Products Marketed in Mansoura City, Egypt

Abstract

Raw milk samples were examined for the presence of aflatoxin M1 and other dairy product samples were examined for the presence of both AFM1 and total aflatoxins using ELISA kits. AFM1 was detected in 29.41% of all products with 36.67% (0.24 μg/kg) in raw milk; 20% (0.15 μg/kg) in milk powder; 20% (0.11 μg/kg) in Ras cheese; 30 (0.19 μg/kg) in processed cheeses; and 40% (0.19 μg/kg) in yoghurt. AFs were detected in 7.27% of all products tested with a prevalence of 20% (10.7 μg/kg) in Ras cheese. However the toxins could not be detected in any of examined milk powder, processed cheese, or yoghurt samples. The estimated daily intake of AFM1 and total AFs are calculated and compared with the maximum daily intakes recommended by national and international standards.
