Abstract

Background:
Serum pentraxin3 (PTX3) is one of the inflammatory markers found to be increased in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on hemodialysis (HD). The cardiovascular (CV) mortality rate is very high in CKD patients. While PTX3 is associated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in cardiac patients, there was no previous work, that studied the relationship between serum PTX3 and echocardiographic abnormalities in HD patients.
Aim:
The aim of the study is to assess the role of serum PTX3 as a risk factor for CV mortality and its relationship with left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in HD patients.
Subjects and methods:
This a prospective study included seventy-four patients on regular hemodialysis in dialysis unit in the Internal medicine department at the Mansoura university hospital, and fifteen healthy subjects. All patients followed for 24 months for overall and CV cause mortality. Also, serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP), and PTX3, and LV echocardiographic parameters were assessed.
Results:
Serum PTX 3 was higher in HD patients than healthy subjects and significantly higher in deceased HD patients than the survived ones, also PTX3 correlated with LVMI. In the multivariate cox regression analysis, a serum PTX3 was shown to be an independent predictor for CV mortality.
Conclusions:
Serum pentraxin3 can be considered not only as a predictor for cardiovascular mortality but also as a marker for left ventricular hypertrophy in hemodialysis patients.
