Abstract

Background: Hypoglycemia is one of the most common metabolic problems encountered in neonates. Hypoglycemia in neonates can be symptomatic and asymptomatic. Hypoglycemia is known to be associated with brain dysfunction and neuromotor developmental retardation.
Aim and objectives: the aim of the study was to determine the mean difference and correlation between capillary bedside glucose estimation by using glucometer in comparison venous sampling by using laboratory method.
Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional comparative prospective study was conducted on 200 newborns that were admitted to special care baby unit at Al-Wahda teaching Hospital - Derna, Libya from March 2018 till March 2019.
Results: Agreement between blood sugar and blood sugar by glucometer. Showing a significant agreement between venous blood sugar and blood sugar by glucometer. Significant positive correlation between venous blood sugar and blood sugar by glucometer.
Conclusion: Considering the importance of blood glucose level in the diagnosis of hypoglycemia in the first hours of life, an accurate index is required for glucometer readings. In addition, these glucose meters require breaking of skin, causing pain and the potential for infection. However, no methods currently available painlessly and non-invasively evaluate glucose levels accurately in neonates. For good reasons, there is a call for a development of such devices
