Abstract

Background: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is one of the most relevant neck malignancies that is critically endangers health &even life of humans. There is a strong need to identify specific markers of LSCC that assumed to have valuable prognostic value, furthermore, even may show a great aid in designing the treatment plan.
Objectives: The aims of our study were to study the expression of p16 in LSCC and correlate it with different clinical and pathological parameters and to study the expression of other immune-histochemical markers such as P53 and Cyclin d1 in relation to expression of p16 in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.
Patients and methods: This retrospective study included 50 Paraffin blocks that were collected from previously diagnosed squamous cell laryngeal carcinoma patients during the period of the research from Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University and from certain accredited private laboratories.
Results: The expressions of P16, P53 and Cyclin d1 in the squamous cell laryngeal carcinoma samples, our results indicated that 90% were positive P16, 78% were positive P53 and 50% were positive Cyclin d1. p16 expression developed a statistically significant correlation with the tumor extension and certain histopathological types.
Conclusion: P16, P53 and Cyclin d1 are considered to be as indirect markers for Human papillomavirus (HPV) related LSCC.
