Abstract

Background: The primary goal for the surgical treatment of rectal cancer is to achieve an oncologic cure while preserving function. Intersphincteric resection and colo anal anastomosis is used to treated low rectal cancer and improve quality of life
Aim of the work: This study aimed to evaluate the oncological safety of colo anal anastomosis after resection of low rectal cancer with detection of early post-operative complication.
Patient and methods: This study included a total 10 patients who underwent total mesorectal excision and colo anal anastomosis attending at Damanhour Oncology Centerfrom decamber 2018 to novamber 2019.
Results: Ten patients were included with adequate safety margin. Postoperative complication including anastomotic leakage (20%), fistula (20%), wound infection (30%), wound dehiscence (10%), ileus (30%).
Conclusion: The Colo Anal Anastomosis technique should be considered as a safe procedure and a valuable alternative to APR in selected patients with distal rectal cancer so The inter sphincteric resection(ISR) and Colo-anal anastomosis(CAA) technique provides an opportunity to perform sphincter saving surgery in treatment of distal rectal cancer.
