Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible therapeutic potential of methylene blue (MB) against sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in adult female albino rat models. Rats were intraperitoneally injected with single dose of 1 mg/kg body weight/day for 15 days. Arterial blood samples were withdrawn at time intervals of 1, 5, 10 and 15 days. The present results showed that CLP induced blood sepsis accompanied with inflammatory reactions in terms of increased blood leucocytes count, elevated levels of erythrocyte sedimentaion rate, c-reactive protein and IgG. In addition, blood sepsis induced oxidative stress in terms of decreased level of reduced glutathione and increased level of malondialdehyde indicating lipid peroxidation. MB treatment showed a beneficial effect in minimizing the adverse effect of CLP.
