Abstract

The impact of the aqueous extract of Solanum nigrum as a molluscicide for the control of the brown garden snail, Eobania vermiculata, was studied under laboratory conditions. The present study revealed that, the rate of mortalities of the tested snails depends on the dose and duration of exposure to this extract. The highest mortality rates were noticed at doses of 8%, 6%, 4% and 3%. Large amounts of mucus were secreted by snails just after the contact of the extract with their soft bodies. The treated snails showed histological alterations in the digestive gland and ovotestis. The digestive cells were shrinked or completely degenerated. The excretory cells were significantly increased in number. The ovotestis showed some degeneration in the late stages of spermatogenesis.
