Abstract

The present study was carried out to confirm the structure of the digestive gland cells of the slug Lehmannia marginata from histological, histochemical and ultrastructural points of view. The study was carried out on healthy slugs, collected from their natural habitats in Egypt. Histologically, the results revealed that the digestive gland cells are of three distinct types; digestive, calcium and excretory cells. Histochemically, the cytoplasm of these cells showed positive reactions with periodic acid Schiff's reagent (PAS) and bromophenol blue stains, indicating the presence of various degrees of polysaccharides and proteins. Ultrastructural examination of the digestive gland revealed the presence of different sizes of digestive vesicles and secretory granules. In conclusion, there are more or less similarity in the histology and ultrastructure of the mentioned types of cells of the digestive gland of Lehmannia marginata. This may be due to the function and activity of these cells.
